A Shape

Act 1: Exposition

Act 2: Crisis

Act 3: Resolution

Act 1: Exposition

  • Who is our protagonist? What should we know about them?
  • What does "normal" look like for our protagonist?
  • Where are they headed? What would their life be like if there was no story?
  • Something is about to change. Where might that change come from?

Pass your paper to a partner.

Something is changing. We hinted at it before. The seeds are there.

What happens? Introduce the change; do not say what the protagonist does next.

Pass the paper back to the original writer.

Act 2: Crisis

  • Something has happened. Our protagonist cannot continue as before.
  • What is the conflict that drives this change?
  • What are the forces pulling on the protagonist? - How far will our protagonist go?

Act 3: Resolution

  • How does our protagonist return to a normal?
  • What changes within them as a result of this crisis?
  • What changes in the world or in their situation as a result of this crisis?
  • What does "normal" look like now? Where are they headed now?

Pass your paper back to the person who introduced your change. Share and chat about your stories!
