Week 5T

Journal Writing

Leaving Homeless Person On The Streets... Scott Keyes

  1. Read and annotate the article.

  2. On the back, write a short response:

    • If your birthday is on an odd-numbered day, write a response as if you agree completely with what Keyes is saying. Why do you think his plan is a good idea?

    • If your birthday is on an even-numbered day, write a response as if you disagree completely with what Keyes is saying. What problems do you see with his plan?

  1. Find a partner in the opposite group. (Each pair should have two odds or two evens.) Meet somebody new!

  2. Read your partner's response, and then write a counterargument. If they agreed with Keyes, write a response that disagrees with both them and Keyes.

  3. Read your partner's counterargument. As a group, decide together whether you agree with Keyes or disagree with Keyes. (Be prepared to explain your reasons!)

If your group decided to agree with Keyes, move to the side of the class by the door. If your group decided to disagree with Keyes, move to the side of the class by the windows.

Debate time!

Each group will have 10 minutes to prepare a short presentation of their reasoning.

Team Agree will go first. Your presentation should explain what Keyes is proposing and why your group thinks it's a good idea. (3-5 minutes)

Team Disagree will go second. I'll give you five minutes to prepare responses to what Team Agree said. Your presentation should respond to Team Agree's arguments, and explain why Keyes's plan is a bad idea. (5-8 minutes)

Team Agree will have the last word. You'll have five minutes to prepare responses to Disagree's arguments, and offer your closing arguments. (2-3 minutes)

In groups of no more than 3:

  • Writer 1:
    • Read paper out loud.
  • Everyone (Including Writer):
    • Respond in writing to the paper:
      • What one thing does the writer think will best help poverty?
      • What evidence from their sources do they use to show that?
      • What do you want to hear more about?
      • What do you think about what they’re saying?
    • Share and discuss your responses.
    • Give written feedback to the writer.
  • Repeat with each writer's paper.
