The Reflective Essay is an important component of the Final Portfolio. It has two jobs. First, it tells me how you think about writing. Second, it gives you a chance to make an argument for me about why you think you should pass.
Your Task
In your Reflective Essay, your task is to convince me that your Final Portfolio demonstrates that you are meeting the Course Outcomes as illustrated by our Portfolio Rubric. There are several ways that you might go about this.
One option is to discuss in your Reflective Essay those areas where you feel your Final Portfolio is weakest. That is, if you feel your Writing Project has problems with organization, you might choose to write in your Reflective Essay about the different ways of organizing your essay that you tried, and how they did and didn’t work. In short, you can use the Reflective Essay to talk about the places where you feel your Writing Project doesn’t completely represent your abilities, as a way of strengthening those weaker points.
Another good idea: if you include something in your Additional Material, it should be because you think it’s important for me to see as I’m grading your writing. If it’s important enough to include, you should probably talk about why you included it in your Reflective Essay, and explain what you’re wanting me to see in it.
Ultimately, the approach you take is up to you, but your job in the Reflective Essay is to convince me that you’re ready to move on to Engl 1.
