In a new Word document, break each of these sentences into sentence cores using the skills we’ve practiced.

Starting at the beginning of the sentence,

Do this with each of the five sentences below. At the end, you should have a list of several sentence cores for each example sentence. (Remember, our Sentence Cheat Sheet can help with finding subjects, verbs, and completers.)


  1. There are many teens that make bad decisions, some girls get pregnant and they think that thats all they are going to be able to handle so they end up quitting school, and they usually end up just getting a job.

    Josh’s Answer: There are many teens that make bad decisions. Some girls get pregnant. They think that’s all they are going to be able to handle. They end up quitting school. They usually end up just getting a job.

  2. But even though she had no one to mentor her or that parental guidance that was much needed, she still prevailed and kept a positive mind set throughout her lack of her parents meaning her father was never there.

  3. Ghostbread by Sonja Livingston is a unique book in a sense that she does talk about her past and tries to get the readers so experience what she had to go through as a child by talking about important events in her life along with important people.

  4. That’s why a lot of the children that Sonja knew and grew up with that lived in poverty just end up living in those conditions for there whole lives because they don’t know any other way to live.

  5. At the end of page 224 is where she is struggling in school and the teachers are trying to get her on track, and because she was encouraged to finish school so she would not end up like her mother did she finally get on track and get passing grades.

    Josh’s Answer: At the end of page 224, she is struggling in school. The teachers are trying to get her on track. She was encouraged to finish school. She would not end up like her mother. She did finally get on track and get passing grades.
